Beard Foundation Announces Gala, Charlie Trotter Scholarship

On Tuesday, July 9, the James Beard Foundation hosted a preview at Langham Place, 5th Avenue for its upcoming fall gala event.

In November, the Beard Foundation will host Celebrating Charlie Trotter and the New American Cuisine, in the form of a multi-course dinner hosted by Norman Van Aken.

Chef Trotter, who died in November 2013, is remembered as one of the most influential figures in the shaping of American cuisine.

Hosted at the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York City, the extensive menu will be prepared by several of Trotter’s closest friends, including Norman Van Aken (Norman’s), Emeril Lagasse (Emeril’s), Mindy Segal (Mindy's HotChocolate), Guillermo Tellez (Mercadito Hospitality Group), and Tetsuya Wakuda (Tetsuya’s), among others.

The Beard Foundation also announced The Charlie Trotter Memorial Scholarship, a grant of up to $10,000 a year which will be awarded to an aspiring culinary professional who wishes to continue their education through culinary school.

Application forms will be available beginning April 1, 2015, and the recipient will be announced August 2015.

“Throughout his extraordinary career, Charlie Trotter was an admired leader in our culinary world, playing a major role in shaping the way chefs and how America eats,” said Susan Ungaro, president of the James Beard Foundation

“Our gala this fall will honor and celebrate not only his innovation in the American culinary arts, but also recognize this commitment to philanthropy with a special JBF memorial scholarship.”
